Resolving Sewage Backup Problems and Causes of Sewage Backups
Sewage backup is one of the most common household problems. Because sewage backup can lead to serious health hazards, you have to resolve such a problem right away. Sewer backup is typically an indication of a problem on the pipe lines or system. Knowing who to ask repair help from is the first step to a prompt resolution of sewer backup problems.
Now, in order to determine who to call, first you should find out whether the problem is in your residential pipe line or in the public pipe system. Often, by determining what has caused the sewage backup, you'll know exactly whether to call a private sewage restoration services or the city public works.
Blockage of lateral line between the residential and the city's main pipe line is one of the most frequent causes of sewage backup. These blockages are often caused by solid objects like debris, grease, and rags.
The most common indication that you have a sewer blockage is wastewater backup and presence of discharge on your floor drain. You can keep the degree of sewage backup in check by turning off water and avoiding use of plumbing fixtures until after a plumber or sewage restoration contractor has assessed the problem and checked your sewer.
Blockages in residential property pipe lines are the responsibility of the owner. However, if your plumber indicates that the blockage occurs on a public sewer line, you can call your local public works office for help. If public works is closed, you can also call your local police for assistance. Often though, if city Public Works assesses that the cause of blockage occurring on public pipe line is not a result of structural defect, you may be required to pay for all or part of the expenses related to removal of blockages.
Sometimes also, especially in places where the material used for making pipes were clay tiles, blockages in pipes are caused by tree roots that enter through misaligned pipe joints. In cases where your plumber suspects or detects that tree roots have entered sewer pipe lines, you should call public works for restoration help. If public works find that there is root infiltration indeed, root growth elimination and control measures will be implemented. However, if the roots that have infiltrated public pipe lines come from a tree in your property or if infiltration has occurred on private property line, you will be charged for investigation and blockage clearing expenses.
If sewage backup is caused by a problem in the main sewer lines, city Public Works will take full responsibility of the expenses. When suspected that backflows in your drains are caused by problems in main sewer services, you have to inform Public Works right away so they could send an operator to find out if there are indeed problems in the main city pipes. The city will also give you advice on what to do while they are fixing defects or blockages in the main pipe system.
If sewage backup is causing flooding in your basement (and this occurs without you opening faucets or shower) you should contact Public Works right away. This way, the City Office can immediately send a repairman to the main sewer system. The City Office will also advice you what to do in case water enters your basement at an uncontrollable rate.
